Inyokern, CaliforniaInyokern is a census-designated place located in Kern County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 984. It was a railroad town established along the Southern Pacific railroad (which is no longer in use). Geography Inyokern is located at 35°38'51" North, 117°48'50" West (35.647430, -117.813795). It lies in Indian Wells Valley, with the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevadas rising to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 28.7 km² (11.1 mi²). 28.7 km² (11.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 984 people, 418 households, and 270 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 34.3/km² (88.9/mi²). There are 519 housing units at an average density of 18.1/km² (46.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 87.70% White, 0.41% Black or African American, 4.88% Native American, 2.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 3.76% from two or more races. 6.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 418 households out of which 25.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.96. In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 30.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 104.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.7 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $35,046, and the median income for a family is $41,500. Males have a median income of $50,938 versus $33,889 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $21,707. 20.5% of the population and 10.5% of families are below the poverty line.
