Interstate 305

The Interstate 305 number was also used for a never-built spur in Salem.
Interstate 305 is an unsigned Interstate Highway in Sacramento, California. Not only is it unsigned, but Caltrans (the state department of transportation) does not use the number, since it is also part of US 50. The road is also signed as Business Loop I-80, and it is part of CA 99 east of I-5. It runs for 8.44 miles (13.6 km) from I-80 in West Sacramento (at the west end of US 50) across I-5 to the CA 51/CA 99 interchange southeast of downtown Sacramento (where Business Loop I-80 turns off onto the unsigned CA 51).

Numbering

The number came about in May 1980, when I-80 was moved to the new bypass around Sacramento (formerly I-880) and the former I-80 became Business Loop I-80. This was done in part because the old I-80 was not up to Interstate standards, and a replacement was cancelled; the I-305 part, however, was up to standards, and was kept an Interstate for funding purposes. The part of old I-80 that didn't become I-305 had never been officially added to the Interstate system, since it was planned to be bypassed.
