Interstate 140Interstate 140 is a spur route of Interstate 40 near Knoxville, Tennessee. It runs south from Interstate 40 (Co-signed with Interstate 75) near Farragut to U.S. Highway 129, near the McGhee Tyson Airport. It intersects with U.S. Highway 11 and U.S. Highway 70 near its northern terminus. The designation Interstate 140 is also planned for an outer loop of Interstate 40 near Wilmington, North Carolina. Its primary function is providing a bypass for U.S. Highway 17 around Wilmington, which is reflected by the original name for the road project, U.S. 17 Wilmington Bypass. The bypass is divided into three sections based on their estimated completion dates. The middle section, extending west from Interstate 40 to U.S. Highway 421 is 8 miles in length and is scheduled to be completed in August 2005. The section extending east from Interstate 40 to U.S. Highway 17 is 7 miles in length and is scheduled to be completed in June 2006. The final section, 12 miles in length, extends west from U.S. Highway 421 to U.S. Highway 74 and U.S. Highway 76, and finally terminating at U.S. Highway 17. This section is not scheduled to begin construction until 2009, however, multiple factors, such as a second river crossing, may delay its construction. Additionally, a proposed southern extention of Interstate 140 would extend for 8 miles southeasterly from U.S. Highway 17 to its terminus, the proposed Cape Fear Skyway Bridge.
