International Island Games AssociationThe International Island Games Association's main role is to organise the Island Games, which is held every two years where the members came to compete in a friendly competition in 15 sports. Its members currently are: Aland, Alderney, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Froya, Gibraltar, Gotland, Greenland, Guernsey, Hitra, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Jersey, Orkney, Prince Edward Island, Rhodes, Saaremaa, Sark, Shetland Islands, St. Helena, Western Isles, and finally, Ynys Mon. Minorca of Spain is applying to be its twenty-fifth member (as of 2004) and another unidentified island is applying for membership. The role of the International Island Games Association (IGA) is a wide-ranging one. It is charged not only with the task of pulling together all the different strands of responsibility which comprise the overall organisation but also has to ensure conformity with legal and financial obligations. Liaison with the 24 Member Island Associations, as well as sponsors and the media, to update them with the latest information obviously represents an important part of the work. As news of the Games popularity spreads throughout the worlds islands more applications for membership are received and the Association report on these to see if they match the criteria laid down for entry.
