Introduction

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) is the Scottish accountancy body for chartered accountants and auditors. It is based in Edinburgh.

History

ICAS was founded in 1854 as The Society of Accountants in Edinburgh, and was the first professional body of accountants. The name changed to the current name in 1951, when the society combined with two other scottish accountancy bodies.

Membership and Qualification

ICAS currently has approx 15,000 members worldwide. Membership is generally obtained by entering a training contract with an accountancy firm (although it is possible to train within industry), during which the student gains experience and sits a number of exams. Members are entitled to use the designatory letters "CA" after their name.
