Indian Statistical Institute

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is an institution devoted to the research, teaching and application of statistics, natural sciences and social sciences.
                                               

History

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), founded by Professor P.C. Mahalanobis, grew out of the Statistical Laboratory set up by him in the Presidency College in Kolkata. ISI gained the status of an Institution of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959. The Institute was the first organisation in India to acquire an electronic computer. The Hollerith Electronic Computer, HEC-2M, was in operation in the Institute in 1956.

Campus

The institute has its headquarters at Kolkata and two major centres at New Delhi and Bangalore.
