In Sickness And In Health

In Sickness and in Health was a BBC television sitcom sequel to the highly successful Till Death Us Do Part, an everyday tale of a dysfunctional family in East London . In this series, which premired in 1985, the character Alf Garnett's wife Else (played by Dandy Nichols) is confined to a wheelchair (a consequence of Nichols' own confinement to a wheelchair) and eventually dies (in fact Nichols herself had died in 1986). After her death Alf is devastated - he can no longer spend her pension. Shortly, after Else's death, Alf hired a black, gay man named Winston to do housework. Alf soon found a new thorn in his side when the building acquired a new landlady, Mrs. Hollingberry, who was constantly sticking her nose in Alf's business. Eventally, Alf began courting her, however, and they traveled to the Outback to be married. But Alf got jilted and moved back to London. During the final season he found a fortune in bank notes and lived the last few episodes a wealthy man. The show was cancelled in 1992.
