Illinois State Route 6right Illinois State Route 6 is the northwestern quadrant of a four-lane freeway that loops around the city of Peoria, IL. It begins at its intersection with Interstate 474 and Interstate 74 west of Peoria, and ends at an intersection with Illinois State Route 29 in Mossville (south of Chillicothe). The freeway currently has a total length of 9 miles. Although fairly short, Illinois 6 is starting to draw more traffic because of its proximity to the city of Peoria. A major mall is at the center of development at the intersection of Illinois 6 and U.S. Highway 150 (War Memorial Drive). In addition, new development is occurring at the other interchanges of Allen Road, Illinois State Route 40 (Knoxville Avenue), and Illinois 29. Plans have been in place to "finish" Illinois 6 by building a northern bridge over the Illinois River and connecting it to Interstates 74 and 474 by Interstate 155, or to build northeast from its current terminus, convert Illinois 116 into a freeway, and make it part of the controversial Peoria-to-Chicago Highway. As of late 2004, only the Illinois 6 extension to Illinois 29 in Chillicothe itself is being considered. Preliminary engineering (phase 1) is taking place, which involves determining the exact placement of the highway extension. 6
