Igor Giorgadze

Igor Giorgadze (b. 1950) is Georgias former security chief charged for ex-President Eduard Shevardnadzes assassination attempt. He is the son of the retired Soviet General Panteleimon Giorgadze, the current leader of United Georgian Communist Party. Lieutenant-General Giorgadze served as Minister of State Security of Georgia in 1993-1995. In 1995, he was charged in a car bomb terrorist act against Shevardnadze. However, Giorgadze managed to escape to Russia. Later he was also suspected in various political assassinations of 1994-1995 and warrants were sent out to Interpol for Giorgadze's arrest. Numerous requests of Georgia, the Interpol and the US Congress for his extradition have been turned down on the ground that the Russian law enforcement agencies were unable to establish his whereabouts. However, Giorgadze is known to live in Moscow and he is a frequent guest of Russian TV programmes. Despite being abroad, Igor Giorgadze attempted to run for President of Georgia in the 2000 and 2004 elections, but Georgias Central Election Commission (CEC) refused him to register. He runs his own party Fairness (Samartlianoba in Georgian) in Georgia.
