Ice Hockey At The 1994 Winter Olympics

The ice hockey tournament at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, was won by Team Sweden. The final against Team Canada is famed for its tension. Sweden scored 2-2 with only 1.49 remaining, and the game went into overtime. Even after this and five penalty shots, the score was tied. Eventually the tie was resolved after a spectacular goal by Peter Forsberg (later depicted on a Swedish stamp, to the dismay of goaltender Corey Hirsch), followed by a just as spectacular save by Tommy Salo. This was the first time Sweden won an Olympic ice hockey tournament. In the bronze medal game, Team Finland defeated Team Russia by a staggering 4-0. Another notable fact about the tournament is that it was the breakthrough of Team Slovakia (winning one of the groups and losing to Russia on overtime in the quarter finals) as a hockey nation.
