Hurricane Diane

Hurricane Diane was one of three hurricanes to hit to North Carolina during the 1955 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Diane struck an area that had been hit by Hurricane Connie five days earlier. Diane made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane near Carolina Beach, North Carolina on August 17, 1955, and continued northward into the Mid-Atlantic and New England as a tropical storm the next day, dropping large amounts of rain in an area already saturated by Hurricane Connie. Over 400 people died in the aftermath of Diane and Connie.
