Hotchkiss School

The Hotchkiss School is a private, coeducational preparatory school in Lakeville, Connecticut, USA. It is one of the wealthiest high schools in the world.

History

It was founded in 1891 by Maria Bissell Hotchkiss with the encouragement of President Timothy Dwight V of Yale.

Campus and Facilities

It is set in 545 acres (2 km²) of woodland and is in proximity to two lakes. This allows additional environmental science courses to be offered. The school is well known for its photography and video program. The 212,000 ft² (19,700 m²) athletic center opened in 2002, while a 715 seat glass-enclosed performing arts center and music pavilion will open in Spring 2005. Hotchkiss' 9 hole golf course was created by famed designer Seth Raynor. As of the start of the 2004-2005 school year Hotchkiss boasts 555 students, over 200 faculty and staff, and an endowment valued at more than $320 million.

Alumni include

Fictional Hotchkiss alumni

In the book Primary Colors by Joe Klein, later turned into a film, the principal character Henry Burton was educated at Hotchkiss, and is frequently referred to as 'Hotchkiss'. In Jeffrey Archer's novel Sons of Fortune protagonist Fletcher Andrew Cartright is a Hotchkiss alumnus.
