Hopkins County, Texas

Hopkins County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 31,960. Its county seat is Sulphur Springs6. Hopkins county is named for the family of David Hopkins, an early settler in the area.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,053 km² (793 mi²). 2,026 km² (782 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.31% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 31,960 people, 12,286 households, and 8,882 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (41/mi²). There are 14,020 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.11% White, 7.99% Black or African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 4.55% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. 9.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,286 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.50% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.70% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.04. In the county, the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $32,136, and the median income for a family is $38,580. Males have a median income of $30,377 versus $20,751 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,182. 14.60% of the population and 11.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.40% of those under the age of 18 and 14.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
