season, having finished his career with the
Los Angeles Galaxy
. He won the Bronze Ball in the
2002 World Cup
as the third best player in the tournament, as he captained the Korean team to a fourth place finish. He ended his international career after the 2002 World Cup as the all-time leader in appearances for the
South Korea national football team
, with 135. Hong was named by

as one of the
top 125 greatest living footballers
in March

.
