Holmes County, OhioHolmes County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 38,943. Its county seat is Millersburg6 and is named for Andrew Holmes, an officer killed in the War of 1812. Holmes County is home to the world's largest concentration of Amish settlements. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,098 km² (424 mi²). 1,096 km² (423 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water. Adjacent counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 38,943 people, 11,337 households, and 9,194 families residing in the county. The population density is 36/km² (92/mi²). There are 12,280 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.03% White, 0.33% Black or African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 11,337 households out of which 44.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.50% are married couples living together, 6.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.90% are non-families. 16.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.35 and the average family size is 3.82. In the county, the population is spread out with 35.60% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 17.80% from 45 to 64, and 10.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 99.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $36,944, and the median income for a family is $40,230. Males have a median income of $28,490 versus $20,602 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,197. 12.90% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line.
