Hjalmar

Hjalmar was a Swedish hero who figures in the Hervarar saga and in Orvar-Odd's saga. He was one of the bravest of heroes but also one of the most arrogant. Once, he and the Norwegian hero Orvar-Odd were to fight each other, but seeing that Orvar-Odd had less ships than himself, he asked some of his ships to leave so that the forces would be equal. Then the warriors fought until they established that they were equally skilled fighters, whereupon they entered sworn brotherhood. Hjalmar spent many years as one of the Swedish king Yngvi's men at Uppsala, where he fell in love with the Swedish princess, Ingeborg. When the feared berserker Angantyr menacingly wanted to marry Ingeborg, Hjalmar told Yngvi about his own services to his king, and that he had greater right to Ingeborg. Yngvi then asked Ingeborg to decide and she wanted to marry Hjalmar rather than Angantyr. Offended, Angantyr then challenged Hjalmar to a duel on Sams. At the stipulated time, Angantyr arrived at Sams with his eleven brothers, while Hjalmar arrived with Orvar-Odd. Hjalmar chose to fight Angantyr, while Orvar-Odd fought and killed Angantyr's eleven brothers. Hjalmar finally slew Angantyr but was lethally wounded himself. The last thing he did was to leave his ring to Orvar-Odd who would give it to Ingeborg with Hjalmar's last words. Orvar-Odd brought Hjalmar's corpse to Sweden and gave his ring and last words to Ingeborg. She died of grief and they were buried in the same mound.
