Highland Township, Oakland County, Michigan

Highland Township is a charter township located in Oakland County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 19,169. Highland Township was founded by pioneer families in 1835. A major factor in the developement of Highland was the railroad, which allowed lumber to be transported cheaply, and allowed pickels from the township's early factories to be exported easily.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 92.8 km² (35.8 mi²). 87.1 km² (33.6 mi²) of it is land and 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.14% water. Nearly 1/4 of the land in Highland Township is owned by the State of Michigan as part of Highland Recreation Area.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,169 people, 6,786 households, and 5,374 families residing in the township. The population density is 220.1/km² (570.2/mi²). There are 7,179 housing units at an average density of 82.4/km² (213.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.42% White, 0.30% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 1.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,786 households out of which 41.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.8% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.8% are non-families. 16.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.17. In the township the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.3 males. The median income for a household in the township is $62,805, and the median income for a family is $70,286. Males have a median income of $50,944 versus $29,867 for females. The per capita income for the township is $25,484. 5.8% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.7% of those under the age of 18 and 6.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
