soldier executed in the aftermath of the
American Civil War
for
war crimes
. The
Swiss
-born immigrant commanded the infamous
POW
prison in
Andersonville, Georgia
. Atrocious conditions in this prison resulted in the deaths of over 13,000 Union prisoners.
