Hengelo is a municipality and a town in the eastern Netherlands, in the province of Overijssel. The city lies along the highway A1/E8 and is a station for the ICE, Amsterdam - Hannover - Berlin. Population centres The town of Hengelo Hengelo rapidly developed from a small village to a town in the late 19th century when it became a significant railway junction. This attracted heavy industry like Stork, Heemaf and Hollandse Signaal Apparaten. During WWII the city was often bombed by Allied because of the presence of the railways. Accidentally the heart of the town was bombed out, killing several hundred people. Hengelo (Ov) versus Hengelo (Gld) Hengelo is not to be confused with a smaller village, also located in the east of the Netherlands, in the province of Gelderland. This village is situated 40km towards the southwest from Hengelo and has some 8'700 residents (4'500 in the main village). Hengelo in this context is sometimes given the suffix of (Ov) short for Overijssel, to distinguish it from Hengelo (Gld). However, as per January 2005, the village of Hengelo (Gld) merged with 4 other municipalities in the region, upon which occasion the name Hengelo (Gld) was obsoleted in favour of Bronckhorst (postal code new: 7021).
