Henderson, TexasHenderson is a city located in Rusk County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,273. It is the county seat of Rusk County. Henderson is named for James Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of the state of Texas. Annual events in the city of Henderson include the Heritage Syrup Festival in November, celebrating the east Texas tradition of syrup making, and the East Texas Sacred Harp Convention in August. Geography Henderson is located at 32°9'14" North, 94°48'10" West (32.153938, -94.802732). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.1 km² (12.0 mi²). 30.8 km² (11.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,273 people, 4,350 households, and 2,971 families residing in the city. The population density is 365.8/km² (947.6/mi²). There are 4,831 housing units at an average density of 156.7/km² (406.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 68.98% White, 22.34% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 6.80% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 11.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,350 households out of which 32.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.12. In the city the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $31,766, and the median income for a family is $38,095. Males have a median income of $31,285 versus $19,473 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,491. 15.9% of the population and 12.0% of families are below the poverty line.
