Heiden, Switzerland

Heiden is a municipality in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland (800 m a.s.l.). It has a population of 4,000 (as of 2002). The area of Heiden is 7.48 km². Around 1650 Wolfhalden and Heiden could not agree about the control over the church. This led to the creation of a church in each village in 1652, making them independent. A cog railway leads to Heiden from Rorschach 400 meters below.
