Hedge End, Hampshire

Hedge End is a village in Hampshire approximately 10 miles west of Southampton, in the Borough of Eastleigh. In the 1950's, Hedge End was primarily an agricultural village, with a population numbering around 1000. Since 1965, however Hedge End has grown relentlessly and with a population now more than 20,000, has become an important dormitory town for Southampton. Hedge End is located close to the M27, and is the site of a number of 'superstores' close to the motorway. The village gained a Railway Station in the early 1990's, a stop on the Eastleigh-Portsmouth line. Because of its close proximity to Eastleigh, and despite the huge, continuing swell of population, attempts to improve facilities such as the addition of cinemas and sports facilities etc have been unsuccessful. Even the number of Pubs has remained constant, despite a 20-fold increase in population, as such, there is little evening activity. The village retains little character, and is indistinguishable from other suburban areas. The Fish & Chip shop in the centre of the village, however, is well worth a visit.
