Health Science Center Brooklyn

The State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, better known as SUNY Downstate Medical Center, is an academic medical center and is the only one of its kind in the Borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Older than the Brooklyn Bridge, SUNY Downstate was established as the Long Island College Hospital in 1860 and is the oldest hospital-based medical school in the United States. Today, it is one of the country's leading urban medical centers. The Center has 1,516 students (as of 1999), of which 50% are minorities and/or recent immigrants. SUNY Downstate's College of Medicine has the highest percentage of minority students of any medical school in New York State. SUNY Downstate is Brooklyn's fifth largest employer.
