Hawthorne is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the town of Mount Pleasant in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the hamlet had a total population of 5,083.

Geography

Hawthorne is located at 41°6'13" North, 73°47'45" West (41.103664, -73.795807). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,083 people, 1,581 households, and 1,258 families residing in the hamlet. The population density is 1,161.3/km² (3,006.0/mi²). There are 1,590 housing units at an average density of 363.3/km² (940.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the hamlet is 93.13% White, 3.34% African American, 0.02% Native American, 1.48% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.16% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 6.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,581 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.1% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% are non-families. 16.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.97 and the average family size is 3.36. In the hamlet the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.7 males. The median income for a household in the hamlet is $81,370, and the median income for a family is $92,042. Males have a median income of $52,477 versus $39,142 for females. The per capita income for the hamlet is $28,664. 3.3% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.3% of those under the age of 18 and 1.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
