Hauppauge, New York

Hauppauge is a hamlet in the Town of Islip and the Town of Smithtown in Suffolk County, New York.

Geography

Hauppauge is located at 40°49'6" North, 73°12'25" West (40.818205, -73.206878). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 28.4 km² (11.0 mi²). 28.0 km² (10.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 20,100 people, 7,006 households, and 5,597 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 717.9/km² (1,860.0/mi²). There are 7,153 housing units at an average density of 255.5/km² (661.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 93.25% White, 1.14% African American, 0.03% Native American, 3.59% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 4.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,006 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.6% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% are non-families. 16.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.21. In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.5 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $78,178, and the median income for a family is $84,819. Males have a median income of $58,103 versus $38,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $30,915. 3.1% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.2% of those under the age of 18 and 3.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
