Harvey Pitt

Harvey Pitt was appointed 26th chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2001. Mr. Pitt graduated from the City University of New York Brooklyn College with a bachelor's degree in 1965 and from St. John's University School of Law with a JD degree in 1968. He served as chairman until 2003, inheriting the debacles of the go go-nineties from former chairman Arthur Levitt including the bankruptcies of Enron and WorldCom. Pitt was seen by many as an aggressive regulator, going after the greed, excesses and failures rampant in the last decade of the 20th century which surfaced on his watch. He worked to reconcile the demands of accountants, legislators and stockholders with such legislation as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Prior to that he was a partner of a global Washington, DC law firm and was widely considered one of the preeminent experts in his field. He coined the phrase 'corporate darwinism'. Mr. Pitt was a founder and first president of the SEC Historical Society http://www.sechistorical.org. He left the SEC to form the global consulting firm Kalorama Partners. Mr. Pitt is the father to four and is a popular columnist with Compliance Weekly. He is a sought-after speaker and regular commentatory in webcasts and tv interviews on financial matters.
