Harvey Gantt

A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Harvey Gantt was the first African-American enrolled at Clemson University. After receiving a degree in architecture, he continued in that profession and was elected the first black mayor of Charlotte. He staged an unsuccessful U.S. Senatorial campaign against Jesse Helms in 1990.
