Hannah Van Buren

Hannah Van Buren (nee Hoes) (1783 - 1819) was the wife of the 8th United States President Martin Van Buren from 1807, until her death. She was also one of his maternal cousins. She died of tuberculosis at age 35, 17 years before her husband was elected to the presidency. Because she died before Martin became President, she was never the First Lady of the United States. Martin was one of the few Presidents not to be married while in office. During his term, his daughter-in-law, Angelica Van Buren performed the ceremonial duties of First Lady.
