Geography Hallowell is located at 44°17'12" North, 69°47'52" West (44.286802, -69.797884). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.8 km² (6.1 mi²). 15.2 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.76% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,467 people, 1,145 households, and 604 families residing in the city. The population density is 162.3/km² (420.1/mi²). There are 1,243 housing units at an average density of 81.8/km² (211.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.20% White, 0.41% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,145 households out of which 25.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.7% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.2% are non-families. 41.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.80. In the city the population is spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $36,058, and the median income for a family is $50,643. Males have a median income of $32,199 versus $26,531 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,457. 8.0% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line.
