Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova ScotiaHalifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is a regional municipality and the provincial capital of Nova Scotia, Canada. The 2001 population was 359,111, making it Canada's 13th most populous urban centre, although only the three former municipalities of Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and adjacent areas of Halifax County which have experienced urban sprawl can be properly considered "urban". In the early 1990s the provincial government sought to reduce the number of municipal governments in Halifax County and Cape Breton County and created a task force in 1992 to pursue this rationalization. In 1995, an Act to Incorporate the Halifax Regional Municipality received Royal Assent in the provincial legislature and the HRM was created on April 1, 1996.
