Halifax County, North Carolina Halifax County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 57,370. Its county seat is Halifax6. History The county was formed in 1758 from Edgecombe County. It was named for George Montague-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax, President of the Board of Trade from 1748 to 1761. In 1774 the southeastern part of Halifax County was combined with part of Tyrrell County to form Martin County. Law and government Halifax County is a member of the regional Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,894 km² (731 mi²). 1,879 km² (725 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.82% water. Townships The county is divided into twelve townships: Brinkleyville, Butterwood, Conoconnara, Enfield, Faucett, Halifax, Littleton, Palmyra, Roanoke Rapids, Roseneath, Scotland Neck, and Weldon. Adjacent Counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 57,370 people, 22,122 households, and 15,308 families residing in the county. The population density is 31/km² (79/mi²). There are 25,309 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 42.57% White, 52.56% Black or African American, 3.14% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 22,122 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.10% are married couples living together, 20.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% are non-families. 27.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.06. In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 90.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.00 males. The median income for a household in the county is $26,459, and the median income for a family is $33,515. Males have a median income of $28,025 versus $20,524 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,810. 23.90% of the population and 19.40% of families are below the poverty line.
