Hms Achilles (1778)

HMS Achilles a 74-gun 3rd rate ship of the line which fought at Trafalgar. Originally the French ship Annibal she was renamed Achille in 1786 and was one of six ships captured at The Glorious First of June (also known as the Third Battle of Ushant). It was Achilles which first sighted French and Spanish ships and signalled to Nelson, "Have discovered a strange fleet." During the battle she engaged her namesake ship on the French side Achille (74) and captured the Berwick (74). See HMS Achilles for other ships of the same name.
