Guyandotte River
The
Guyandotte River
is a tributary of the
Ohio River
, approximately 166 mi (267 km) long, in southwestern
West Virginia
in the
United States
. It drains an area of the
Appalachian Mountains
south of the Ohio between the
watersheds
of the
Kanawha River
to the northeast and the
Big Sandy River
to the southwest. It rises in southwestern
Raleigh County
and flows initially WNW into
Wyoming County
and past
Mullens
and
Pineville
. In western Wyoming County it approaches to within 10 mi (16 mi) of the common border between West Virginia,
Kentucky
, and
Virginia
and flows through
R.D. Bailey Lake
reservoir before turning north. If flows generally NNW across southwestern West Virginia past
Mount Gay
and
Chapmanville
.
West Virginia State Highway 10
follows the river for much of its course below the reservoir. In its lower reaches in
Cabell County
it follows a highly
meandering
course and enters the Ohio from the south approximately 5 mi (8 km) east of
Huntington
.
