Gutnish Language
Gutnish
(in Swedish
gutaml
or
gutniska
) is a language of the eastern branch of the
North Germanic languages
, spoken on the island of
Gotland
. It should not be confused with the Gotlandic dialect of the
Swedish language
(in Swedish
gotlndska
), but many do, which might be a reason why it is not recognized as a separate language under the
European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages
. The present dialects of Gotland are descended from the
Old Gutnish
dialect of
Old Norse
.
