Grundy County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 14,332. Its county seat is Altamont ⁶.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 935 km² (361 mi²). 934 km² (361 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 14,332 people, 5,562 households, and 4,054 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (40/mi²). There are 6,282 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.33% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,562 households out of which 33.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 12.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.01. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $22,959, and the median income for a family is $27,691. Males have a median income of $27,063 versus $17,447 for females.
