Gresham, Oregon

Gresham is a city located in Multnomah County, Oregon. It was named for the American Civil War general Walter Quinton Gresham. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 90,205.

History

Although a post office was established in May, 1884, Gresham was not incorporated as a city until 1905. Since 1981, Gresham has been the home of the Mount Hood Jazz Festival, an annual festival of jazz musicians.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 57.6 km² (22.2 mi²). 57.4 km² (22.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.40% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 90,205 people, 33,327 households, and 22,695 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,572.4/km² (4,071.6/mi²). There are 35,309 housing units at an average density of 615.5/km² (1,593.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 82.72% White, 1.89% African American, 0.94% Native American, 3.33% Asian, 0.27% Pacific Islander, 7.02% from other races, and 3.82% from two or more races. 11.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 33,327 households out of which 36.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% are non-families. 24.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.17. In the city the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.9 males. The median income for a household in the city is $43,442, and the mean income for a family is $51,126. Males have a median income of $37,701 versus $27,744 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,588. 12.5% of the population and 8.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
