Great Western TrailUpon its abandonment, two non-consecutive sections of the former right-of-way of the Chicago Great Western Railway in suburban Chicago and northern Illinois became biking and hiking trails. The Western Section of the Great Western Trail The older of the two sections, between western St. Charles, Illinois in Kane County, Illinois and eastern Sycamore, Illinois in DeKalb County, Illinois, was right-of-way abandoned in 1977. This eighteen-mile crushed-stone path traverses unincorporated rural townships, natural wetlands, some restored prairies, and farmland. The Eastern Section of the Great Western Trail The newer of the two sections, between Villa Park, Illinois and West Chicago, Illinois in DuPage County, Illinois, was right-of-way abandoned piecemeal throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. This twelve-mile crushed stone path crosses some farmland and suburban areas. At the east end of the trail is a former CGW depot building. The Great Western trail also makes several connections with the Prairie Path. External links * Friends of the Great Western Trail
