Government College UniversityGovernment College University Lahore is a co-educational public university located in Lahore, second largest city of Pakistan. Initially it served as a college, Government College Lahore. The College was granted the status of university by the Government in 2002. It provides instruction from master level to doctorate level in more than fifteen disciplines including Botany, Economics, English, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Urdu, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, and Statistics. As a new university, GCU has made great strides during the last two years. Currently, the university has nearly 5000 students and 275 faculty members. Alumni of Government College are called Ravians. History Government College University Lahore, as a college, is older than any other college or university in Pakistan. Under the British Raj the college was opened on January 1st, 1864 in a portion of Raja Dhyan Singh Haveli. The institution was affiliated with Calcutta University for examination. Along with the establishment of the college, Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner (professor of Arabic and Mohammedan Law at King's College in London) was nominated as principal of college. He was also instrumental in the foundation of Punjab University, Lahore (established in 1882). The first class consisted of nine students, all of whom matriculated from Calcutta University.
