Goodmanham

Goodmanham alias Godmundin Gaham, is a small village about 2 miles to the north-east of Market Weighton. It was a parish in the wapentake of Harthill. The village was once the main centre of pagan worship in the north of England, with a temple dedicated to the god Wotan. "...the place of the idols at Goodmanham lying to the east of York beyond the Derwent." Christianity came to the area in 627 AD, following the conversion of Edwin of Northumbria, to the Christian faith. The temple at Goodmanham was shortly thereafter destroyed. A church now stands on or near the site.
