Goh Chok Tong (Chinese: 吴作栋, Hanyu Pinyin: W Zudng; born May 20, 1941), was the second Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore from November 26 1990 to August 12 2004, having had succeeded Lee Kuan Yew. He served a total of 14 years. He is currently Senior Minister of Singapore, and the secretary-general of the People's Action Party since 1992. He is also the chairman of the central bank of Singapore, the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Goh previously studied in the Raffles Institution from 1955 to 1960, he was said to be a very competitive swimmer. Entering politics at 35 years old, he had previously served as Senior Minister of State for finance, Minister for Trade and Industry, Health and Defence. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the National University of Singapore and a Master of Arts in Development Economics from Williams College in the United States. Loved and respected by most Singaporeans for his consultative methods of governing, he also tried to dispel alleged rumours of a "Slapping Incident" of his successor, Lee Hsien Loong.
