German Auxiliary Cruiser Orion

The Nazi German auxiliary cruiser Orion was a merchant raider of the Second World War. Originally the transport ship Kurmark, Orion was one of the first merchant ships to be converted. She left Germany on 6 April 1940, passed down the Atlantic disguised as neutral vessel and passed Cape Horn and entered the Pacific. Orion laid a minefield off Auckland Harbour and together with sister ship German auxiliary cruiser Komet sank several ships off the island of Nauru. Orion returned to Bordeaux in occupied France on 23 August 1941 after 511 days at sea. She was later renamed Hektor and used as a repair and artillery training ship. In January 1945 she was rechristened Orion and was used to transport refugees in the Baltic Sea. There she was bombed on 4 May 1945 and sunk. Of the 4,000 passengers on board, only 150 survived. The hulk was scrapped in 1952.
