Georgios Zoitakis

Georgios Zoitakis (1910 - 1996) was a Greek General. Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos launched a bloodless military coup in Greece on April 21, 1967. The Colonels did not enjoy total support within the army, however, and in December 1967 Constantine II launched a countercoup. After this failed King Constantine II went into exile. General Georgios Zoitakis acted as Regent for the absent King. June 1, 1972 Greece became a republic with Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos as president. After Greece's return to democracy in 1974, Zoitakis was condemned by a court of justice.
