George Stoneman

George Stoneman (18221894) was a U.S. political figure. He served as the Governor of California between 1883 and 1887. Stoneman was born on a family farm in Busti, New York. His parents were George Stoneman (Sr), a lumberman and justice of the peace, and Catherine Rebecca Cheney. He studied at the Jamestown Academy. He graduated from West Point in 1846 and served in the Mexican War. His room-mate was "Stonewall" Jackson. During the Civil War he was made Major General of volunteers. He served in a variety of posts after the war. After retiring from the army as a colonel in 1871, he bought a ranch near Los Angeles. In 1882 he was elected the Democratic governor of California. George Stoneman died while visiting a daughter in Buffalo, New York.
