Gary City is a town located in Panola County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 303.

Geography

Gary City is located at 32°1'52" North, 94°22'2" West (32.031113, -94.367291). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²). 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 303 people, 114 households, and 82 families residing in the town. The population density is 61.6/km² (159.8/mi²). There are 131 housing units at an average density of 26.6/km² (69.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.68% White, 0.33% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.33% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 114 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.4% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% are non-families. 24.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.23. In the town the population is spread out with 31.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.7 males. The median income for a household in the town is $24,219, and the median income for a family is $34,531. Males have a median income of $31,250 versus $13,125 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,151. 20.2% of the population and 14.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.1% of those under the age of 18 and 20.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
