Gainesville, TexasGainesville is a city located in Cooke County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,538. It is the county seat of Cooke County. 1920 Olympic Champion Charlie Paddock was born in Gainesville. Geography Gainesville is located at 33°37'49" North, 97°8'25" West (33.630360, -97.140323). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 44.1 km² (17.0 mi²). 44.0 km² (17.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.18% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 15,538 people, 5,969 households, and 4,005 families residing in the city. The population density is 352.9/km² (914.1/mi²). There are 6,423 housing units at an average density of 145.9/km² (377.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 80.77% White, 6.00% African American, 1.33% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 9.09% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. 17.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,969 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% are non-families. 29.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.13. In the city the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 88.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $30,571, and the median income for a family is $37,137. Males have a median income of $30,480 versus $21,459 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,154. 20.5% of the population and 17.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.5% of those under the age of 18 and 12.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Things of note Gainesville is home to an impressive courthouse with an octagonal rotunda topped by stained glass, erected in 1910. The courthouse grounds feature one of the most impressive Confederate soldier memorials in Texas, erected in the early 20th century by the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), topped by a Confederate soldier facing northward, and bearing a poetic inscription honoring the Southland's fallen heroes.
