Furness Railway

The Furness Railway was a railway company operating in the Furness area of north-west England. The company was established on May 23 1844 when the Furness Railway Act was passed by Parliament, the first stretch opening in 1846, with the railway reaching Ulverston in April 1854. The line was intended primarily for the transport of goods, taking slate and iron ore from mines to the coast. The line was linked to Lancaster in 1857 by the Ulverston and Lancaster railway, which was bought out by the Furness Railway in 1862. The Furness Railway also build docks in Barrow-in-Furness, at the time a small hamlet. In the early 20th centuries, faced with falling revenues from goods lines, the railway turned its focus to tourism, also operating steamers on Coniston Water and Windermere. The Furness Railway operated as an independent company until December 1922, when it was merged as one of the constituent companies of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in the Railways Act 1921.
