Frankfurt Hahn Airport (German Flughafen Frankfurt-Hahn) is an international aviation facility located between the towns of Simmern and Kirchberg in the Rhein-Hunsrck district of Rhineland-Palatinate in central western Germany. Despite its name, the airport is situated some 120 km west of Frankfurt.

Transport

The airport is easily reached by car and bus. There are buses every two hours between Frankfurt Hahn and the main railway station in Mainz (60 km away), served by trains to and from all parts of Germany. The bus journey take 70 minutes and costs EUR 10.50 (November 2004). Other buses connect Hahn to Frankfurt International Airport and main railway station as well as to the main railway station in Cologne.

History

The airport was originally the Hahn Air Base of the United States Air Force, and was converted to a civil airport after outliving its usefulness as a military base. One of the main investors in the development of the new civil facility was Fraport AG, which also runs Frankfurt International Airport, the aim being to reduce the amount of traffic using their main airport. Although it handles international flights, Hahn airport does not have the word "International" as part of its name mdash; in order to avoid confusion with the more heavily used and larger Frankfurt Airport proper. As airport charges to operators are low because of its remote location, Frankfurt Hahn is very popular with low-cost airlines like Ryanair, which uses it as one of its principal hubs.

Technical information

Frankfurt Hahn airport can handle planes up to the size of a large Boeing 747 jet.
