Fort Plain, New YorkFort Plain is a village located in Montgomery County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,288. The Village of Fort Plain is at the border of the the Towns of Minden and Canajoharie at the intersection of Routes 80 and 163. History The village is built on the site of a Revolutionary War fort. The fort was constructed in 1776 and a blockhouse was maintained here throughout the war. Geography The village is located on the south bank of the Mohawk River, and the New York State Thruway passes through the community. Fort Plain is located at 42°55'51" North, 74°37'29" West (42.930846, -74.624799). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²). 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.55% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,288 people, 960 households, and 599 families residing in the village. The population density is 649.6/km² (1,680.0/mi²). There are 1,108 housing units at an average density of 314.6/km² (813.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.60% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 960 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% are non-families. 32.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.97. In the village the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.6 males. The median income for a household in the village is $27,476, and the median income for a family is $40,302. Males have a median income of $28,462 versus $21,557 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,369. 14.0% of the population and 10.5% of families are below the poverty line.
