Fort Mill is a town located in York County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,587.

Geography

Fort Mill is located at 35°0'21" North, 80°56'49" West (35.005747, -80.947020). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.8 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,587 people, 2,914 households, and 2,141 families residing in the town. The population density is 642.4/km² (1,662.7/mi²). There are 3,063 housing units at an average density of 259.3/km² (671.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 81.69% White, 15.99% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 1.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,914 households out of which 41.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% are married couples living together, 17.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% are non-families. 23.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.09. In the town the population is spread out with 31.1% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 86.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $44,627, and the median income for a family is $56,538. Males have a median income of $42,469 versus $27,253 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,519. 10.1% of the population and 8.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.7% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Notable business

Though Fort Mill is a small town, it has been the home of several nationally notable business, including Jim Bakker's defunct Heritage USA, Muzak and Springs Industries.
