Floyd is named for Dolphin Ward Floyd, who died on his 32nd birthday, March 6, 1836 defending the Alamo. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,571 km² (993 mi²). 2,570 km² (992 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water. Adjacent counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,771 people, 2,730 households, and 2,110 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 3,221 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 74.16% White, 3.38% Black or African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 19.66% from other races, and 1.81% from two or more races. 45.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,730 households out of which 39.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.90% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.70% are non-families. 21.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.26. In the county, the population is spread out with 31.40% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $26,851, and the median income for a family is $32,123. Males have a median income of $25,487 versus $18,929 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,206. 21.50% of the population and 19.50% of families are below the poverty line.
